Aldi is making a controversial change to its checkout systems

At the minute, it feels like supermarkets are continually making changes to how they operate and the rules for shoppers in stores.

In a bid to keep queue numbers down, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, M&S, Sainsbury's and Lidl have all changed their policies and operating hours, and they all seem to have been successful in doing so.

The latest retailer to announce a change to stores is Aldi - which is set to add more self-checkout systems to stores in the UK.

According to the Sun, the latest supermarkets to have the tills installed are:

  • Lichfield
  • Atherstone
  • Hounslow
  • Tooting

These have been installed after successful trials at these stores:

  • Bedford
  • Bishop's Stortford
  • Manchester Arndale
  • Woodgate

It's reported that a further three stores are set to install self-checkout machines between now and the end of July.

Speaking about the decision to increase its self-checkout availability earlier this year, a spokesperson for Aldi said: "Following positive feedback, we’ve extended our trial of self-service checkouts to four more locations to further improve the customer experience."

However, not everyone was quite so enthusiastic about the news - with many shoppers refusing to use self-checkouts.

Responding on Facebook, one disgruntled shopper wrote: "I wouldn't use them. Pay for staff checkouts a lot of us like a bit of chat with a real person not a machine."

Another said: "Self service is taking away people's income and will be slower using a machine. No machine can go as fast as a Aldi till operator person."

A third said: "Well I won't be using them."

There has been positive feedback, though, with many shoppers welcoming the idea.

One user said: "At last, hate having to queue when you only have a few bits."

Another added: "I think it's a great idea and a way for a bargain superstores to keep the prices even lowersix tills one staff member the rest will be busy loading the shelves as they can never keep up.

"I like hands off service to be honest."

But while self-checkouts have divided shoppers, there's one Aldi product that seems to have united everyone - its £149.99 garden egg chair.

Earlier this week, Aldi's website saw over 19,000 people virtually queueing at 1.30 am to nab themselves one of the snazzy chairs.

But the swinging egg, which is part of the supermarket's latest Specialbuys range, sold out quickly, leaving many shoppers disappointed.

The chairs are now sold out online, and won't be available in stores, so if you're after one, you might need a plan B.
