Aldi Ireland shoppers left fuming as lockdown rules lead to big cancellation

Aldi shoppers across the country have been left fuming after Covid-19 lockdown rules led to a big cancellation.

With retailers only allowed to sell essential items under Level Five restrictions, various retailers have already issued statements regarding what they're allowed to sell.

New measures have led to gardai clamping down on non-essential items being sold in shops that are allowed remain open.

Thousands of retail outlets were forced to close last week as Ireland entered its second lockdown, including clothing, toy and gift stores.

Aside from this, supermarkets selling non-essential items will now face enforcement action.

With this in mind, Aldi has announced that they'll be postponing all non-essential Specialbuys / middle-aisle promotions.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, a spokesperson said: “In line with Government guidance, we have decided to postpone all non-essential product Specialbuys promotions. One-off Specialbuys offers on essential products will continue to be placed on sale each Thursday and Sunday. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during these challenging times.”

When contacted by the Irish Mirror this week about what stock would be removed from shelves, an Aldi spokesperson responded: "The vast majority of our range is made up of groceries and other essential household items that Irish families rely on.”

However, all non-essential product special buy promotions and offers will not be available in Stage 5.

And customers have voiced their frustration with the cancellation, as some branded the new rules a "joke".

One wrote: "Often people buy in preparation for Christmas over a number of weeks leading up to the celebrations. This will adversely affect these people, please reconsider."

While another added: "This government is an absolute joke, easily know they don't live in the real world and haven't a clue as to what is essential or what is non essential."
