Aldi insiders explain why check-outs are so small - and why it helps to keep prices low

One of the secrets behind budget supermarket's Aldi's meteoric rise is down to the size of the check outs, company insiders have revealed.

The speed at which the cashiers ring up customer purchases has seen the German store, along with its fellow discounter, Lidl, the German chain is outperforming its "Big Four" competitors, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's and Asda.

Its ability to keep prices low is actually down to a few factors - or tricks - as revealed in Inside Aldi: Britain’s Biggest Budget Supermarket, reports the Mirror.

The Channel Five documentary featured ex-staff and experts who lifted the lid on the clever ploys that the retailer has used to make its products so competitively priced.

And the small check out areas is a prime example of Aldi efficiency.

Experts on the show confirmed that a small till area prompt shoppers to put items straight back into their trolleys and then pack them at the back of the shop.

This means the check-out is cleared quicker for new shoppers, and staff can scan more items.

It's efficiency measures such as these which help keep prices low.
