Aldi hit with customer backlash after latest store changes announced

Budget-friendly supermarket Aldi has left customers split after a controversial announcement about its checkout services.

The supermarket, which is one of the UK's cheapest, is introducing a new way to shop in its stores, according to Birmingham Live and some customers are not happy about the changes.

For the first time, shoppers can now pick up their groceries in a check-out free store.

The German chain has stated that the trial store is in London but has yet to reveal its specific location and when it could potentially come to stores here in Scotland.

Currently, the system is being tried out by employees and is not yet available to customers - but shoppers will be required to have access to a smartphone in order to shop at stores.

B Fender wrote: "This tracking tech costs millions. If Aldi can afford it they can afford to lower their prices, or employ more staff, or even pay existing staff more. It's not for me I have to say. Aldi should offer both systems, have at least one check out in the store."

Portia added: "This sort of thing is getting ridiculous! We are certainly being controlled bit by bit."

One wrote: "So, as I have no smart phone, I am effectively banned from this store ? Thanks a bunch."

Another person replied with: "I don't get people really. Most Aldi customers ignore the core principle of the business by refusing to pack their shopping at the packing desk and pack at the till, but now they complain that they're taking the tills away. Will they not know how to pack their stuff then?"

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said: “We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will give us a wealth of learnings.

“We are really excited to be testing this concept that will enable customers to pick from our range of quality products, all available at unbeatable prices, then leave the store without having to pay at a till.”
