Aldi gives 28,000 workers pay rise - making it top-paying UK supermarket

Aldi is to give 28,000 workers a pay rise from July this year, in what will make it the best-paying supermarket in the UK.

The wage rise will see hourly pay for store workers increase to £11.40 per hour nationally.

It comes only two months after a pay increase came into force, which handed store assistants £11 an hour.

Shop workers within the M25 will see wages rise to £12.85 an hour.

It means the new starting rate is more than 13% higher than it was a year ago, Aldi said, and comes as part of a £100million investment.

The hourly pay will also be higher than the Real Living Wage, which is £10.90 per hour nationally and £11.95 inside the M25.

The announcement follows a series of pay increases, including raising hourly rates for 7,000 warehouse colleagues across the UK.

Aldi is set to create more than 6,000 new jobs this year, adding to the 4,500 permanent roles created last year.

The supermarket has more than 40,000 employees and over 990 stores in the UK.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector and we are committed to ensuring they are also the best paid.

“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and are pleased to become the first UK supermarket to pay a minimum of £11.40 per hour to all Store Assistants.”

Aldi isn't the only supermarket to announce pay rises for staff in recent weeks.

Entry-level staff at the Lidl have seen see their hourly pay rate rise by 10p from £10.90 an hour to £11.

Tesco is also pushing its hourly rates past the £11 mark with its recent increase taking their rate to £11.02 from April 2023.

Asda announced its pay rates will be rising to £11 per hour from April 2023 and £11.11 per hour from July this year.

The rates for workers inside the M25 will increase from £11.27 an hour to £12.17 in April, then to £12.28 an hour in July.

Sainsbury's staff have seen their pay increase from £10.25 an hour to £11, and from £11.30 to £11.95 for those in London.

M&S staff recently had their hourly pay hiked from £10.20 to £10.90, with pay for employees in London stores going up from £11.25 to £12.05.
