Aldi fans send website into meltdown as 84,000 queue for 'Special Buy of the year'

Aldi was forced to suspend sales after tens of thousands of shoppers inundated its website on Saturday, as the grocer restocked its Special Buy of the year - the hanging egg chair.

The German discounter, which is famed for its one-off promotions, announced plans to bring back its popular garden range which sold out in just minutes online last year.

The £149 chair returned as a Special Buy, which means that once it's gone, it's gone.

Alongside the chair, Aldi also released a three-piece Rattan Effect Bistro Set for £149.99 and a Duel Fuel BBQ for the same price.

With garden events likely to provide an opportunity for friends and family to gather as Covid-19 restrictions are relaxed over the coming months, demand for outdoor furniture has soared.

It attracted more than 84,000 customers - more than four times last year's online queue which peaked at 19,000 people.

As of 8.44am, those visiting the site were told as many as 23,000 people were ahead of them in the queue.

Aldi was forced to pause sales due to such high demand.

One shopper said the queue was over 84,000 when they attempted to visit the Aldi website.

Another said the queue had exceeded 69,000 when they took a look.

A message on the Aldi website said: "You're in the queue...

"We're very sorry, but there are currently lots of people trying to access the Aldi website.

"We've automatically placed you in a queue.

"Don't worry about refreshing - this page will update automatically as soon as you can enter the site."

The grocer paused the virtual queue just before 9am.

Aldi appeared to credit the popularity of its site with the new products, adding: "Sorry for your wait, our website is extremely busy at this time.

"Our Garden Furniture is extremely popular but more stock will be added over the coming weeks!"
