Aldi faces customer backlash after announcement on store changes

Aldi has left customers divided after a controversial announcement about its checkout services.

The budget-friendly supermarket is introducing a new way to shop in its stores, according to Birmingham Live.

For the first time, shoppers can now pick up their groceries in a check-out free store.

The German chain has stated that the trial store is in London but has yet to reveal its specific location.

Currently, the system is being tried out by employees and is not yet available to customers.

B Fender wrote: "This tracking tech costs millions. If Aldi can afford it they can afford to lower their prices, or employ more staff, or even pay existing staff more. It's not for me I have to say. Aldi should offer both systems, have at least one check out in the store."

Portia added: "This sort of thing is getting ridiculous! We are certainly being controlled bit by bit."

Marcus Aurelius wrote: "So, as I have no smart phone, I am effectively banned from this store ? Thanks a bunch."

But Warwickshire Fox replied: "Aldi is different to other supermarkets as there shop workers don’t spend all their time on the tills or chatting to coworkers. Can’t see it leading to a lot of job cuts."

Brick Hardmeat replied with: "I don't get people really. Most Aldi customers ignore the core principle of the business by refusing to pack their shopping at the packing desk and pack at the till, but now they complain that they're taking the tills away. Will they not know how to pack their stuff then?"

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said: “We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will give us a wealth of learnings.

“We are really excited to be testing this concept that will enable customers to pick from our range of quality products, all available at unbeatable prices, then leave the store without having to pay at a till.”
