Aldi eyeing up 30 locations for new stores - see if your town is on the list

Aldi has revealed its “wish list” of new store locations with 30 places in its sights.

The discounter is opening 100 new stores across the UK as it pushes ahead with plans to open an average of one new store a week.

It has now released an updated list of some of the locations where it is currently looking for new sites.

Places where Aldi wants to open new stores include York and Coventry, as well as smaller towns such as Bicester and Hitchin.

Other key areas it has highlighted in England include Guildford, Milton Keynes and Northampton.

Aldi also wants to open shops in Cathcart, Dumbarton and Peebles in Scotland, as well as Aberdare, Barry and Lampeter in Wales.

The supermarket currently has 920 shops in the UK so an expansion of 100 branches would take it above 1,000 sites.

The budget grocer says it needs sites that are big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces.

They should be preferably on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access, it said.

Aldi will also spend money investing in new and expanded distribution centres.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “We’re continuing to gain even more customers - with over 60% of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.

“Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible.

“Looking ahead, we are excited to provide millions of new customers with access to Aldi’s award-winning quality and unbeatable value as we create even more places and more ways to shop with us.”

The news comes as Aldi launches its first-ever online home store, selling everything from furniture to candles.

Aldi has also confirmed it will finally start selling gift cards and you can load up to £500 on them.

Here are the 30 places Aldi wants to open new stores:

  • South East – Bicester, Guildford, Milton Keynes,
  • South West – Cheltenham, Penzance and Plymouth
