Aldi eliminates two million pieces of plastic from its Easter range

Nestled within cardboard boxes and often protected by egg-shaped plastic casing, Easter eggs come with a lot of packaging for just a thin chocolate shell treat.

But Aldi has pledged to reduce plastic in its seasonal confectionery offering, removing two million pieces of plastic packaging entirely.

The supermarket has removed the need for vacuum-formed plastic shells by giving some of their Easter eggs a square-shaped bottom, so they can stand up by themselves without the need of plastic support.

As well as that, Aldi is amending six of its Easter lines to make them 100 per cent plastic free.

Several products will have the plastic display window replaced with compostable cellulose film, made from wood fibres.

And one fully-sustainable chocolate box will have an insert made from recycled potato skins.

In total, it will amount to 29 tonnes of plastic removed from Aldi's Easter offering.

Richard Gorman, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi UK, said: “We’re committed to eliminating plastic wherever possible, and the changes to our Easter range are a great example of removing unnecessary plastic that we can all do without.

“We know our customers want to protect the environment, and it is changes like this that make all the difference."

It's not the first time Aldi has worked to replace unnecessary plastic packaging.

Last year, it removed more than 5.5 million pieces of plastic from its offering, including successful changes to the Christmas range.

The supermarket hopes to make all of its product packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of 2025.
