Aldi drops prosecco price to £4.99 in perfect time for the Bank Holiday break

In a move which will no doubt add extra sparkle to the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, Aldi has cut the price of a popular prosecco to under a fiver.

Bottles of Castellore Prosecco Spumante Doc are currently on sale for just £4.99 among a selection of store suggestions of what to buy for a Bank Holiday treat.

Shoppers can save £1 on the usual price of £5.99 for the 11% extra-dry Italian tipple which is described as an ideal partner for the likes of delicate fish, white meat and cheese.

Aldi says of its bargain buy: "Citrus fruit and flowery features characterise this wine's scent", adding the prosecco has: "soft and fruity peach and pear flavours, with notes of breezy apple peel and lemon zest.

Its  price reduction quickly caught the eye of Prosecco Watch - a  UK-based "prosecco appreciation" Facebook page - which highlighted the deal to its 133,000-plus followers.

Drinking too much prosecco will rot your teeth

And the post immediately attracted lots of comments, with fizz fans sharing their intentions to stock up ahead of the May 27 Bank Holiday Monday break.

Kelly Kennerley wrote: "We need to go to Aldi right now"; Jade Jones said: "I got some from there earlier in the week and it was lovely" and Emma Mcburnie added: "I’m getting 20 loll."

Aldi, however, has a message on its website for anyone planning an all-out mass buy, saying: "Please note you cannot purchase more than 36 bottles."
