Aldi customer stunned after being hit with £240 in parking fines while shopping

An Aldi shopper has been left stunned after being hit with £240 in penalties for parking her car at a neighbouring pub while she was inside the supermarket.

Kerry Silvester, from Stoke, has been parking at the pub for years and was shocked when she received four £60 penalties in just two weeks.

The 43-year-old faces a total bill of £240 but it will rise to £400 if she doesn't pay quickly enough.

Kerry told StokeonTrentLive it was a "genuine" mistake, adding: "I'm not trying to dodge anything and I would have paid the parking charge or gone elsewhere if I'd known."

She said she has parked at the Hem Heath pub to do her shopping at Aldi's Trentham Lakes store for years.

Kerry received a £60 fine through the post on March 19 and has been warned three more are on the way.

She said: "I've shopped at the Aldi opposite the pub for years and always parked on the pub car park and walked across to the store.

"There are not many spaces in front of Aldi and everyone parks at the pub.

Mums who lost dad of their children in crash became unlikely friends after tragedy

"I didn't look out for any signs because I've never had any problems before and I couldn't see a pay-and-display machine.

"And then on March 19 I had a fine through the post for parking at the Hem Heath."

She got in touch with private firm Britannia Parking, which operates the pub's car park, and was told she had used the car park without paying three other times.

Kerry said: "They told me there are signs that I need to pay for parking.

"If they'd sent the fine sooner, I would have known and wouldn't have continued to park there.

"They shouldn't take so long to send the letters.

"My husband went over to look and there is a pay-and-display machine on the other side of the car park.

"I'm not trying to dodge anything and I would have paid the parking charge or gone elsewhere if I'd known."

She added: "I'm really upset about it because it's a genuine mistake.

"I don't want to be paying £60 fines just to get a loaf of bread. I'm shopping at Aldi to try to save some money.

"These must be really recent changes."

A spokesman for Britannia Parking said: “The Hem Heath pub car park is for patrons only.

“The pub had experienced issues with non-customers parking on the site, which it privately owns.

"A pay-and- display machine was installed to address the issue of illicit parking and to ensure spaces were available for pub customers.

“Signs were prominently displayed in the car park clearly notifying customers of the change in the conditions of use, and of the charges at the car park.

“As with any other car park, customers who overstay or fail to pay are at risk of a parking charge notice.

"Notices are sent out as promptly as possible.”
