Aldi customer calls police over Leeds store's alleged lack of social distancing measures

A man from Leeds has contacted police after he claimed that as many customers as possible were allowed into his local Aldi store this week.

Chris Willetts, 46, has shopped at the Bramley Aldi every single week since the lockdown began and has been pleased to see orderly queues outside during recent visits, as staff members controlled the number of people allowed inside at any one time.

However, Chris told LeedsLive he was "flabbergasted" that the strict social distancing measures seemed to have disappeared when he went shopping on Monday, May 11.

He alleges that the queues outside had been abandoned and no staff were there to limit the number of people going through the doors.

"It blew me away," said Chris. "All the aisles were full with families.

"Every aisle had at least 10 people walking up and down.

"Every other time I've been it was in control, with the queues outside and limited numbers of people in the store.

"But this time there was nothing apart from the odd sign. I was flabbergasted and I didn't end up doing a full shop.

"I was worried and in a rush to get it over and done with so I could get out. I was cautious of my boundaries with other people, but there was no chance [of social distancing]."

Aldi have put a raft of social distancing measures in place at other stores across Leeds, including two metre markers on the floor, perspex screens at the checkouts and limiting entry at busy times.

Chris, who lives in the Post Hill area, said that he has not received a response to a complaint he has submitted to the store - and he has also contacted police.

"I've tried contacting Aldi but they've not responded yet," he said.

"I've contacted West Yorkshire Police because in my eyes it's an incident. If the same thing was happening in the park it would be an incident.

"It was unnerving. It was as if there wasn't the crisis and there was nothing wrong. It could have been a scene from three months ago."

An Aldi spokesperson said: "Following government advice regarding social distancing, colleagues are managing the flow of customers into store and have implemented a marker system, to encourage customers to keep a two-metre distance from each other.

"Our colleagues and customers wellbeing is our top priority, and we have taken extra measures to protect them including installing protective Perspex screens on our tills to provide more distance between our customers and colleagues.

"Customers can also help by ensuring they shop alone where possible."
