Aldi crown Edinburgh schoolgirl winner of competition to design UK lorries

An Edinburgh school girl has won a nationwide drawing competition and will have her winning design printed all over Aldi delivery lorries.

Isabella, a pupil from Clifton High School in Newbridge, was awarded top prize in a competition hosted by Aldi, looking for a new design for their lorries.

Isabella, aged five, was asked to hand draw a lorry design that would help promote healthy and fresh food.

As part of Aldi's long-standing partnership with Team GB, athlete Jack Carlin paid a visit to Clifton High School to celebrate the winning entry, as well as taking the time to take part in a Q&A with the children.

Isabella's winning entry impressed judges and athletes Carlin and Max Whitlock with her colourful image of Aldi's fresh fruit and vegetables.

As well as having her prize drawing printed all over Aldi lorries throughout the country, Isabella was also gifted with vouchers and an exclusive Team GB goody bag. Clifton High School will also receive £1,000 in Aldi vouchers, aimed with going towards healthy snacks for pupils.

The 'design a lorry' competition was created as part of the supermarket's Get Set To Eat Fresh initiative that aims to inspire students aged five to 14-year old to cook and eat healthy food. The programme has reached more than two million people across the UK in the past five years.

Triple Olympic champion, Max Whitlock, was more than impressed with Isabella's winning entry: "It was great to see so many children across the country get involved in the competition.

"Selecting a winner from a pool of more than 24,500 entries wasn’t easy, but Isabella’s design really stood out to us due to the bright, colourful and beautifully drawn fruit and vegetables."

Mary Dunn, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi, said: "The Design a Lorry competition is just one of the initiatives we’ve created to encourage young people to think about and engage with healthy eating.

"Our judges were really impressed with Isabella’s submission, and we hope that winning this will inspire her to continue learning more about the benefits of healthy eating. Drivers in Edinburgh and across the country should keep an eye out for the lorry when they’re out and about."

Aldi plan on investing in their 100th Scottish store this year, with plans to build new supermarket's at Edinburgh's Hermiston Gait retail park and Dalkeith's Thornybank Industrial Estate
