Aldi confirms face coverings will remain mandatory in all Scottish stores

Aldi has confirmed all must shoppers must continue to wear a face covering in all of their Scottish stores, after the new covid variant was discovered in the UK.

Face coverings have been mandatory in all Scottish branches since July 24 last year, but the move has also been extended to all stores within the UK, including England and Wales following the UK Government announcement last week.

Aldi Chief Executive, Giles Hurley, confirmed the supermarkets stance on face masks by saying: "“The safety of our colleagues and customers is our number one priority.

Following the latest Government announcement, wearing a face covering will be mandatory for everyone that shops at Aldi from Tuesday 30 November, except for those who have a medical exemption.”

The supermarket has also confirmed that all Covid-19 safety measures such as hand sanitising stations, screens and social distancing will also remain mandatory.

Face coverings are also mandatory in other major supermarket stores such as Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco.

While face coverings have been mandatory in all Scottish stores, the new announcement for all UK branches comes after the rules were relaxed back on July 19 in England.

From Tuesday, the mandate for face coverings will be mandatory in all stores across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, after health secretary Sajid Javid announced the new rules.

The UK government have yet to announce the exact details for those who break the rules in England.

The supermarkets update on face coverings comes amidst fears over the spread of the new Omicron variant during the festive period, as cases of the new variant have been identified in both Scotland and England.

New travel rules have also been introduced in Scotland following the new variant, as the Scottish government put six countries on the red list.
