Aldi boss issues urgent Christmas shopping update to customers

Now England is in lockdown, supermarket shoppers are adjusting to new rules and restrictions in many stores.

But unlike with the first lockdown, customers now have a new element to content with - Christmas shopping.

People are trying to work out how to navigate things this year, and are still planning how best to tackle the festive period.

Aldi's boss has now laid out his guidance for shopping over the coming weeks.

In a letter to shoppers, the supermarket's CEO, Giles Hurley, said: "As restrictions across the UK continue to evolve, I want to reassure all of our customers that every Aldi store will remain open as normal during this time.

"The majority of our stores are open from 8am – 10pm every day (Sundays 10am – 4pm) and our amazing colleagues are on hand to help you shop safely and find everything you need in store.

"Our shelves are fully-stocked and every Aldi store gets regular deliveries, at least once a day. There’s no need to buy more than normal, so please shop considerately.

"I also want to reassure you about the measures in place to ensure that you can continue to shop safely at your local Aldi.

All of the new UK lockdown rules
  • All our stores have a traffic light system at entrances to ensure a safe number of people can shop at any one time, whilst maintaining social distancing.
  • We have protective screens at all 7,000 of our checkouts and all stores have sanitisation stations for customer use.
  • There are clear signs and social distancing markers advising how to shop safely.
  • We are encouraging payment by card or contactless when possible, with an increased contactless limit of £45.

"For our vulnerable and elderly customers every Monday to Saturday, all our stores remain open 30 minutes prior to their usual opening times to ensure that you can shop as safely as possible. Please note, in England and Wales, this is browsing time only. In Scotland customers will be able to purchase straight away."

The CEO continued: "For all groups entitled to a Blue Light card, including NHS and social care workers, our priority access remains in place. These groups continue to have exclusive access to our stores 30 minutes before normal opening on Sundays in addition to priority access at all other times.

"To help with social distancing, customers are encouraged to shop alone, where possible, and adhere to one person per trolley. We will of course allow customers to shop with others, should they have no alternative.

"We are also continuing to increase the availability of our new Click and Collect service, with more stores being added weekly. The availability of grocery home delivery via Deliveroo is also growing."

Aldi's boss then announced some exciting news about Christmas products. He said: "Over the next few weeks our Christmas products will continue to arrive, and we may even get a visit from everyone’s favourite Carrot!"

The email concluded: "I hope that you, your friends and family are keeping safe and well, and we look forward to seeing you at Aldi over the coming weeks."
