Aldi asked 'polite' homeless man to move from Swansea supermarket after shoppers' complaints

The decision to ask a homeless man sitting outside an Aldi store to leave has sparked anger.

The supermarket in Carmarthen Road, Swansea , said it had received complaints from shoppers about the man who often sits outside the store, and had asked him to move along.

But other shoppers have come to the defence of the man who, with his dog, is said to be a regular fixture in the area. They have described him as 'quiet' and polite.'

Posting on social media, some Aldi shoppers have claimed the supermarket's decision is wrong.

One person commented: "I've never had an issue with him or his dog, always pleasant and certainly not intimidating."

Another said: "This guy is so polite, I've never even heard him ask anyone for money, he just keeps himself to himself with his well looked after dog..... So sad somebody felt the need to complain about him."

One woman even commented that he had once given her £1 as a loan when she didn't have enough money for a trolley.

And someone else angry at the decision said: "This guy has always been there, he doesn't harm anybody, he's basically part of the furniture. I call in to Aldi's every other day to shop - but not any more. Let's get this man back."

The incident comes after a Swansea homeless centre stated it might be forced to close its doors next week if it did not get financial help urgently.

Swansea Drop-in Centre provides a range of services to people who are experiencing homelessness and social exclusion.

And earlier this month, a number of homeless people's tents were deliberately set on fire in Newport City Centre.

Aldi confirmed it had asked the man to move from the site.

A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said: "We received a number of complaints about an individual outside one of our stores who was politely asked to move on."
