Aldi announces new ban coming to every single supermarket in UK

Budget supermarket Aldi has announced an upcoming ban coming into place in every single one of its stores across the country and the rest of the UK.

After it banned plastic egg packaging last month in a bid to reduce plastic waste, the supermarket giant has now vowed to remove plastic straws from all of its own-label drinks cartons.

All of these drinks will now come with a paper straw instead – a move that will save more than 100 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic waste each year.

The ban will remove 70 million plastic straws from circulation – equating to more than 100 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic each year.

Richard Gorman, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi UK, said: “Removing plastic straws from own-brand drinks cartons is another step in our journey to reducing plastic packaging across our products.

"Our customers want environmentally-friendly products, and plastic straws are one thing, in particular, that people want to move away from to help make a difference."

Aldi is on track to have all product packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of 2025.
