Aldi announce where in Lanarkshire they would like to build a new store

Aldi is looking at opening a new store in Uddingston as the firm announced plans to expand in more locations across Scotland.

The supermarket chain is considering opening up shop in the Uddingston and Tannochside area after identifying there isn’t one nearby.

The exact site has not yet been confirmed, however Aldi announced they are on the lookout for land around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate 20,000 square ft.

The firm also confirmed they will ideally be looking for an accessible location on a prominent main road with good visibility that is easy to get to.

Aldi announced they are looking at 19 new store locations in total in Scotland as part of their recent expansion drive.

The chain is targeting having 1200 stores open across the UK by 2025.

Among the towns it hopes to open in are Fraserburgh, Peebles, and Stepps. It also wants to build additional stores in Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dumfries & Galloway.

Aldi, which currently has 92 stores in Scotland and more than 880 across the UK, has identified these 19 areas as they continue to build – which will ideally hold freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for development.

Ciaran Aldridge, national property director at Aldi UK, said: “Aldi is growing rapidly and we are welcoming around a million new customers into our stores every year.

“But there are also hundreds of towns across the UK where there is not an Aldi, meaning there are hundreds of thousands of people who can’t easily access the high quality, affordable food our customers love.

“We are willing to explore all opportunities, including developer-led schemes or existing retail units.”

Currently, the nearest Aldi store for locals in Uddingston is Bellshill.

The supermarket chain also added that while the overall aim for all new stores to open is 2025, the proposals for Uddingston will be as soon as a suitable site becomes available to their specifications, they will go ahead and build the store.
