Dining at Ann Sather restaurant on Christmas morning is what passes for tradition in my family. On the big day for more than a decade, we have been there. I have the photographic evidence of happy faces drooling over cinnamon rolls to prove it.
So you can imagine my disappointment when I heard that Ald. Tom Tunney had opened the restaurant for indoor dining in the midst of a pandemic. The restaurant business has been decimated by all this but, as a leader in the community, Tunney needs to be part of the solution, not the problem.
The alderman is uniquely qualified to work with the city and state to identify ways to help our restaurants, while still accepting that these businesses are especially dangerous when it comes to the spread of COVID-19.
Now, I do understand that no one gets an A+ grade with respect to how well they are following the rules of mitigation during the pandemic. Most people are doing the best they can, and none of us could stand up to total and complete public scrutiny with regard to this. Hopefully this will give Alderman Tunney renewed commitment to leading on this issue.
I look forward to having an Ann Sather cinnamon rolls in person on Dec. 25, 2021.

Give Trump credit
So Donald Trump wants credit for the vaccine because it happened on his watch?
While we’re doling out credit, let’s remember that more than a quarter of million deaths also have happened on his watch. A watch that he knew was ticking away when he first was informed, early last spring, of virus’ grave danger.
Putting his own interests above those of his country, Trump at that time chose not to warn us of the mortal danger we faced, under the guise of not wanting to panic us.
The heartbreak is knowing that much of this — so many people getting sick and dying — was preventable, as proven by other countries’ statistics.

Get the economy rolling
Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan saved us from former Gov. Bruce Rauner, another idiot businessman. So let’s ask Madigan to put together a budget to get us through the pandemic and get the economy rolling again.
