FOR the first time in over 40 years, the ban on alcohol sales at Scottish football stadiums is set to be relaxed.
Supporters will now be permitted to consume alcohol—up to a limit of five pints—marking the first occasion since 1981 that fans will be allowed to purchase alcohol at matches.
The move has sparked debate, with some politicians voicing concerns that lifting the ban may increase the risk of violence at games.
This comes despite longstanding frustration that rugby fans have been allowed to drink at fixtures played on football grounds.
The decision forms part of an ongoing discussion about fan behaviour and safety, which intensified when Glasgow stood as the only one of 12 host cities during Euro 2020 to prohibit alcohol sales within stadiums.
A pilot scheme will now be trialled at two upcoming Premier Sports Cup fixtures later this month, allowing a limited number of supporters to drink inside the stadium.
Ayr United has secured alcohol licences from South Ayrshire Council for their home games at Somerset Park—against Arbroath on Saturday, July 19, and Forfar Athletic on Tuesday, July 22.
According to a statement released via the club's official website, up to 66 supporters aged 18 or over will be able to purchase a special £35 ticket.
This ticket will grant access through a designated entrance in the main stand and includes a total allowance of up to five pints—four pints of Moretti before kick-off and one at half-time.
This trial marks the first time in 44 years that regular football fans, outside of hospitality areas, will be permitted to consume alcohol during a match.

Ayr United stated: "Ayr United FC can confirm alcohol will be on sale at our two upcoming home Premier Sports Cup matches after the club was granted alcohol licences by South Ayrshire Council. These
"The ticket price of £35 will give admission to a maximum of 66 supporters (minimum age 18) per match to enter the stadium through turnstile 13 and includes up to four pints of Moretti per person pre-match and a further pint during the half-time interval.
"Moretti is the only alcoholic drink provided during the test events, with soft drink alternatives available. These ticket prices also include the match ticket.
"Alcohol will be available in the accessible area of the Main Stand to home supporters only.
"The area chosen for the test events is within the current disability section. Supporters who occupy this area are also invited to purchase tickets for the pilot project, but are also able to use the current area to view the match as normal and will continue to enter through Gate G.
"Per current legislation, supporters will not be able to view the pitch whilst in the pop-up bar area, but it is hoped that these events will provide the SPFL and local stakeholders with comfort in the club’s ability to sell alcohol safely within the stadium.
"ID checks will be made at the turnstile, and under-18s will not be permitted to enter the area. Tickets are non-refundable.
"We hope this initiative will add to the enjoyment of the matchday experience for supporters. We appreciate your support and will provide any necessary updates closer to the match."
Serving times for the pilot events are as follows:
Saturday, July 19 – Ayr United v Arbroath: The bar will be open from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and again during the half-time interval.
Tuesday, July 22 – Ayr United v Forfar Athletic: The bar will be open from 5:15pm to 7:15pm and again at half-time.
