News of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement has sent fans of the US superstars into a frenzy, with Australia's prime minister among them.

In a joint post to social media, the pop star and the Kansas City Chiefs NFL player wrote: "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married" - sealing the deal with a 10-carat engagement ring worth an estimated $1.5 million.

Anthony Albanese has welcomed the announcement, drawing comparisons to his own impending wedding to partner Jodie Haydon.

"With due respect to myself and Jodie, I think that Tay-Tay's wedding will probably be bigger," he said at a summit in regional NSW on Wednesday.

"At a time when you pick up the paper, with respect, any paper in the world, and there's a lot of negative news, it's fantastic people falling in love, and it's great. Good luck to them."

The prime minister is due to marry Ms Haydon later in 2025, but a date has not been set.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke was also questioned on Swift's engagement on Wednesday, asked by reporters who were his favourite celebrity couple.

"I'll stick with Albo and Jodie. That's probably the safest answer," he said.

The prime minister has previously shown support for the pop star, attending Swift's 2024 Eras Tour in Sydney, quipping he could be the least-famous person at the concert.

"I'm way down the list ... Sydney, just like Melbourne last week, has just gone cray cray for Tay Tay," he told radio FoxFM at the time.

But his fan status was questioned by then-deputy opposition leader Sussan Ley, who inferred Mr Albanese was not a "real Swifty".

"What the prime minister does on his nights off, it's up to him, of course, and if he wants to see Taylor Swift, that's cool," she told Seven's Sunrise.

"But listening to the emotion from ... thousands of Australians who couldn't get tickets, I just want to say to the PM: hand over your Taylor Swift ticket to a real Swifty."

Swift's seven Australian concerts helped generate more than $300 million for the Australian economy, according to data from NAB.

Other world leaders have also weighed-in on the engagement, with US president Donald Trump telling reporters he wishes Kelce and Swift "a lot of luck".

"He's a great player. I think he's a great guy. I think she's a terrific person," he said of the news.
