Albion Rovers’ 5-1 thumping of Dumbarton might have shocked a few fans and burst a few betting coupons on Saturday, but boss Brian Reid insists it was no surprise to him.
The Cliftonhill side blew the League Two leaders away, racing into a 4-0 lead at half-time and seeing the game out in the second half to leave their hosts stunned.
Joe Bevan bagged a quick fire double inside the opening 12 minutes to set them on their way, before Charlie Reilly also bagged a brace and Callum Wilson netted.
The only blot on the copy book was an 89th minute own goal from Ayrton Sonkur as Rovers ran out comfortable winners and boosted their survival bid with a vital three points to move them further ahead of bottom side Bonnyrigg Rose at the foot of the table.
Reid said: “To come to the league leaders and be 4-0 up at half-time is great credit to the players.
“We were on it from the first whistle. We knew the importance of the game and it was nice to see everything come together.
“I’m delighted with the result and the performance.
“We won 4-0 at Stranraer and 4-0 at Bonnyrigg so we have that in our locker, it is just the consistency.
“As I’ve said plenty of times before, everybody is capable of beating everybody in this division.
“There is not really a great difference between teams. It is just down to who has that consistency and Dumbarton are up at the top of the table because they’ve had that with results this season.
“No disrespect to Dumbarton, it could have been more.
“It could have been six or seven because we created so many chances.
“We never gave too many chances up and it was disappointing to lose a goal late on.
“It was a poor goal to lose but I can’t be too critical of my players, going away from home and winning 5-1.”
Reid was delighted to see young striker Joe Bevan get his first goals since January with his double.
He added: “Joe is a young player, we’ve got to remember that. He is only 18.
“But I was delighted for him on Saturday.
“He scored two good goals and he’s got that in his locker.
“He’s got a great left foot on him, he’s big and strong, good technically and as soon as he gets a sight of goal he tries to hit the target. He really did that for us on Saturday.”
The result did come at a cost, though, and that hasn’t helped Rovers’ injury woes ahead of hosting Stranraer tonight and Rose on Saturday.
Reid said: “Every game we get a couple of players going off injured and it happened again with Sean Fagan going off and Scott Roberts going off with a knock as well.
“You want to go into games unchanged and play the team that is doing well.
“We will enjoy the day and move on to the next one.”
