Albion Rovers star sets sights on title triumph

Albion Rovers are targeting a League Two title win or at least a play-offs place as they head into their season opener at home to Edinburgh City.

Winger Charlie Reilly says the Cliftonhill club are confident of reaching the top of the pile, and hopes their display against Hamilton Accies in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday gives them a massive confidence boost, going into it.

Rovers might ultimately have lost the game 6-5 on penalties for the bonus point, but were 2-0 up and cruising at the interval and held their Championship hosts to a draw in normal time.

Ex-Accies kid Reilly scored his first senior goal with a 25-yard free-kick after David Wilson had hooked an unstoppable shot into the left corner of the net, and admits it was all the sweeter that it happened at New Douglas Park.

He said: "We want to go and try to win the league. We're good enough to do it, we've got good players.

"We want to be at least pushing for the play-offs, so if we get there everyone would be happy and we could just take it from there.

"Hopefully we can get a good start next week, start with a win, but that draw against Hamilton will be a good confidence boost for most players.

"It was good for me to get off the mark but I'm just a bit disappointed with the result.

"We were the better side in the first half and they dominated the ball in the second half.

"We scored some incredible goals; the first was an overhead kick from the edge of the box and then my free kick went in from 25 yards, so it was good.

"It was good to score my first senior goal and to be there just topped it off. It was great, what a feeling it was!

"It gives us confidence going into the league, especially playing against a good Championship side, drawing 2-2 with them in the normal game and then losing on penalties."

Rovers kick off their campaign at home to Edinburgh City after the clash was switched to accommodate City's ground-sharing at Ainslie Park while they wait for their Meadowbank base to be renovated.

Having drawn with them last weekend and won on penalties, Reilly says they know what to expect.

"Last week against Edinburgh City we just couldn't score. We had so many chances, but were just not clinical enough.

"But hopefully the two goals today gave us a bit of a boost, that we can do it.

"Hopefully we can take that into next week and get a couple of goals."
