Albion Rovers star Declan Byrne confident of taking on anyone after League Two revival

Striker Declan Byrne insists Albion Rovers feel like they can beat anyone in League Two and keep the clubs 100-year stay in the Scottish Football League alive.

Forward Byrne bagged two goals in the win over Elgin as the struggling side continued to battle it out with relegation rivals Berwick Rangers.

The 22-year-old feels there is a totally different mood around Cliftonhill, with the club seemingly destined to finish bottom of the pile with a relegation play-off on the horizon just two weeks ago.

He reckons that the squad now have confidence to challenge anyone in the division in the final run-in.

Albion Rovers Q&A as chiefs open up on Cliftonhill, John Brogan, the Lowland League and keeping the club alive

“There has been a different mood about the club in the past couple of weeks,” he told the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser.

“Getting the Clyde points was a major lift but you can see that the gaffer has gone right through the team and brought in more of what he has wanted.

“It’s a totally different team from the boys that were here at the start of the season.

“There is just a real confidence that we are good enough to go and beat teams. There is now a real sense that we can get off the bottom of the table and stay there.

“There isn’t a fear of the teams we’re coming up against any more. There is pressure on, but it’s been such a turnaround.

“The boys have faith that there maybe didn’t have when they first came in. A lot of people wrote us off but we have a totally different attitude now.”

He hopes to pile the misery on The Wee Gers in the fight at the foot of the SPFL with a shock win over the promotion-chasing Bully Wee.

“It’s a massive week for us,” continued Byrne.

“If we can get ourselves ahead of Berwick that will put them under serious pressure. Hopefully they will crumble under that pressure.

“They probably never thought we would catch them or close the gap.”
