Albion Rovers star charged with alleged breach of betting rules alongside Hamilton hero

Albion Rovers' James McGowan and Hamilton hero Dougie Imrie are among a group of 14 players and coaches to have been cited over alleged breaches of the game's rules on betting.

The lower divisions group have been served with the notices by the SFA's compliance officer.

Those in question will appear at Hampden for disciplinary hearings on February 11 and 18 over claims they broke the rules of the game on several occasions and some alleged offences date back to the 2011-12 season.

Albion Rovers' McGowan is one of the players to be cited while Hamilton legend Imrie - recently appointed boss at Championship club Morton - will also face a hearing.

Elgin CIty's Aiden Sopel, Conor O'Keefe, Darrly McHardy, Thomas McHale, Rabin Omar and Matthew Cooper have been cited for alleged offences.

Other players include Ashley Ballam at Strathspey Thistle, Bryan Gilfillan of Threave Rovers, , Arbroath's Gavin Swankie, Robert Scott of Deveronvale, and Shane Sutherland of Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Many of the breaches relate to Disciplinary Rule 31, which affirms: “No club, official, Team Official or other member of Team Staff, player, match official or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA shall gamble in any way on a football match.”

McGowan is alleged to have breached the rule twice between 24 August 2018 and 30 May 2020 while Imrie is up on charges between 23 July 2011 and 6 October 2019.

The 29-year-old has played 21 times this season for Albion Rovers.
