Albion Rovers players donate wages to buy gifts for Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser toy appeal

Kind-hearted players and staff donated their wages to buy toys for needy children to help the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser’s annual toy appeal.

The League Two side took time away from focusing on their football to acts as Santa’s Little Helpers in the run-up to the big day.

The players and management team at the Coatbridge club decided to give a portion of their weekly pay cheque to join supermarkets, community groups and readers to back the annual appeal.

Hundreds of gifts of all kinds of shapes and sizes are have poured into our sixth annual Monklands festive collection.

Local good cause XACT and children’s charity Spirit Aid will distribute the donations to young recipients in time for Christmas.

Boss Kevin Harper heaped praise on his generous dressing room for supporting those less fortunate.

He said: “It was a great thing for the players to do. They totally take the credit for the idea.

“They asked the question if is something we would be interested in doing and they were happy to donate some of their wages to a really good cause.

“Especially at this time of year you don’t want to see anyone without. Unfortunately in society people are without.

“The players decided to dip into their pockets to get some toys to give to a good cause and help some kids this Christmas.”
