Albion Rovers make 'signing coup' with swoop for ex-Hibs and Kilmarnock star

Brian Reid reckons Albion Rovers have pulled off a signing coup with the capture of former Hibernian and Kilmarnock midfielder Paul Cairney.

The 32-year-old became the club's latest signing last night as part of a double signing swoop announced by the Cliftonhill club, who have also added forward Sam Jamieson to their ranks.

Cairney worked under Reid in the 2015/16 season during his spell as Stranraer manager and the pair have been reunited for Rovers' League Two campaign, which kicks-off in October.

And Reid told the Rovers website: “I honestly think this is a massive coup for us.”

“Having worked with Paul I know the real quality he has. His intelligence on the pitch and his natural ability is second to none.

“I have made clear already that I want the squad to have experience and Paul brings an abundance.

“He has a great passing range and will be a steady head on the park.”

Cairney, who has over 300 senior appearances under his belt, is thrilled to move to Monklands, having been out of the game since leaving Peterhead in 2018.

He said: “I am delighted to be back playing again, I have had a wee period out of football but I am more than ready to be playing again.

“When Brian gave me a call it was a no brainer.”

Earlier in the evening, Rovers also announced the capture of East Kilbride forward Sam Jamieson.

The 21-year-old was previously at St Mirren and Reid added: “Sam is the type of player we are wanting here at Albion Rovers. he is a determined, ambitious footballer.

“Sam can play out wide and up-top and is physically gifted. His finishing in front of goal is excellent for this level and he is the type of player I can see chipping in with goals and assists.”

Jamieson said: “I can’t wait to get started, Brian really sold me his vision for the team and the way we are going to go about things.

"I think this is a place I can really develop and grow.”
