Albion Rovers issue refunds after "cyber event" disrupted Betfred Cup clash

Albion Rovers have refunded fans who were unable to watch last week’s stream of the Betfred Cup defeat to Ayr United due to a “cyber-event.”

The clash at Cliftonhill, which Rovers lost 5-2, was played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions, but the live stream provided by Pixellot was hit by technical issues.

Fans had to fork out £10 to watch the clash, but even those who were able to access were hit by technical difficulties and the camera missing some of the goals.

Rovers' use of the system has been backed by Hollywood comic book writer and Rovers fan Mark Millar, who invested £18,000 for the club to show games to fans this season.

An investigation was carried out by the streaming firm who have now revealed they had been the target of a 'cyber event', but insisted no personal data from users was compromised.

A statement issued on Pixellot’s behalf by Rovers said: “Pixellot would once again like to extend our apologies to fans who had paid for and were subsequently unable to view matches on Tuesday.

“Investigations have been ongoing since Tuesday to identify the root cause of why fans were either unable to access the platform to subscribe or unable to access the platform after subscribing.

“It appears that the Pixellot supply chain was targeted by a cyber event.

"This event was disruptive in nature and did not lead to the compromise of personal data.

“Whilst Pixellot and our supply chain have a number of controls in place, we have since implemented further cyber defences which reduces the risk of similar events occurring in the future.”

Rovers stated this afternoon that they believed everyone affected had been contacted and given a refund.

If you have not been contacted, Rovers asked that fans email supporters@albionroversfc.com for assistance.
