Albion Rovers hero Cammy Binnie 'just doing his job'

Albion Rovers goalkeeper Cammy Binnie insists he was just doing his job as his penalty shoot-out heroics earned his side an extra point in their Premier Sports Cup opener against Ayr United.

Binnie, 23, brilliantly saved Ayr captain Sean McGinty's netbound header in the first half, and towards the end of the game superbly punched over a Tomi Adeloye rocket.

The former Stirling Albion shot-stopper then saved spot kicks from Michael Miller and Adeloye as Rovers won 4-2 to take the extra point into Tuesday's clash at Falkirk.

Modest Binnie said after the game: "It's good to get the win for the boys and I'm just doing my job in the team - there are 11 on the park, it's not just me.

"I'm the goalie, it's my job to keep the ball out the back of the net as much as possible, and I'm happy I've done that.

"The boys worked hard, from the front to the back we cleared our lines well, played well, and I thought we kept the ball decent enough as well, considering it's Championship opposition.

"I thought the boys did really well, pressed high when they had the chance to, and defended well from the front to the back.

"I can't fault the lads, they did their jobs, and it's an extra point for us in the table. It's as good as a win.

"The only other option would have been a win, but we'll take it, move on to Tuesday, and it's going to be another tough game.

"Every game in this competition is going to be tough for us - no matter the opposition, we need to treat them all the same, and we're really looking forward to it."

Rovers follow up that trip to the Falkirk Stadium with a clash at home to League Two rivals Edinburgh City and Binnie says that will mean a tough week, but it will also prepare them well for their League Two opener - which is also against the capital side at Cliftonhill.

Binnie said: "It is a tough start to the competition, we're using it still as pre-season, so we're looking to get sharpness and fitness.

"All the boys are still gelling together and there are a lot of new faces - including myself - so it will take a few games to get things going.

"But hopefully we should be up and running for the start of the league season.

"Drawing with Ayr and taking the extra point gives us a lot of confidence; it means we can look to press, and press high, and we know we're going to create those chances in the final third."
