Albion Rovers have the chance to get off the bottom of League Two for the first time this season

Just weeks ago it had seemed impossible - but tonight Albion Rovers have the chance to climb to ninth in League Two.

The Cliftonhill side have occupied the bottom spot in the lowest tier since the 4-0 defeat to Edinburgh City on the opening day of the campaign.

On March 2, Kevin Harper's outfit drew a crunch tie with closest rivals Berwick Rangers, handing the initiative to The Wee Gers in the battle to avoid the relegation play-off against the Lowland or Highland league winners.

It seemed like the 100 years of Scottish Football League football in Coatbridge were on the brink of coming to an end.

Just a week later, in a bizarre turn of events Albion Rovers were awarded a 3-0 win over Clyde and a crucial three points as the Bully Wee were fined for fielding an ineligible player.

That has proved to be a catalyst for the strugglers who have gone on to win tough away ties against both Striling and Elgin.

Tonight, they have their game in hand over their relegation rivals and a win would see them leapfrog Berwick.

Gaffer Harper feels this is the most important game of their season so far.

"It's been a great run but we're under no illusions that the job is anywhere close to being done," he told the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser.

"The Berwick game could have defined our season. It was a big blow to play so well and not win the game.

"Now we actually have an even bigger game tonight.

"Psychologically it could put them (Berwick) on a downer of we go against Cowdenbeath and win and overtake them in the table.

"We're really upbeat about our chances and we're just glad to finally have it in our own hands."
