Brian Reid praised his Albion Rovers players as they beat Bonnyrigg Rose for the second time this season to climb off the bottom of League Two on Saturday.
A Luke Graham strike and a Charlie Reilly penalty had Rovers 2-0 up after 43 minutes before Rose pulled one back through Lee Currie’s free-kick seconds after Reilly’s spot kick.
The Cliftonhill side saw the game out in the second half – which included a late red card for Rose defender Bradley Barrett – to end a run of four games without a win heading into last night’s clash away to Elgin City.
Saturday’s victory was just Rovers’ second win of the campaign, having also turned Rose over at New Dundas Park in August, and Reid was pleased with the response from his players after last week’s loss at Stranraer.
He said: “It was an important win for us. We needed it after recent results and we enjoyed the moment, but we’ve got another tough couple of games ahead of us this week.
“Elgin have picked up and won their last two or three games in a row so it will be a tough game. But we’ve won up there before so we know what we are capable of.
“It was a battling performance but the result was the most important thing. We got a bit of a reaction to last week. Sometimes it wasn’t pretty but we battled well and made ourselves difficult to beat.
“We defended resolutely most of the game and created a few chances.
“Their goal came from a foul at the edge of the box so it wasn’t like we switched off after we scored. Their boy whips one into the top corner from it so it’s difficult to say we could do a lot about that.
“We were disappointed, of course, because we wanted to go in 2-0 at half-time and things would have been a lot more comfortable for us.
"But it was a soft foul at the edge of the box and there’s not much you can do with a strike like that from 20 yards out.
“We didn’t let that affect us and we still went on to win so I’m pleased.”
After Elgin, Rovers then travel to leaders Dumbarton who will still be smarting from a shock 6-0 thumping by second-place Stirling Albion.
Reid added: “It’s a tight league and if you win a couple of games you find yourself in mid-table. We’d like to go on a wee run if we can but we don’t get carried away after a good result.
“Dumbarton have started the season well and we are expecting another tough game there. Nobody saw Saturday’s result coming for them but we are only looking to Elgin right now.”
