Albion Rovers don't fear anyone as they bid to extend Elgin record, says Declan Byrne

Declan Byrne reckons Albion Rovers’ unbeaten start to the season shows they won’t be fearful of anyone as they bid to be up there challenging in League Two this season.

And the striker is confident they can keep that run going this weekend when they face Elgin City -–who they have a strong record against of late.

Rovers have lost just once in their last four meetings and haven’t lost on their last three visits to Borough Briggs, winning twice.

Having started the season with a 2-0 win over much-fancied Edinburgh City and a 2-2 draw with promotion hopefuls Stenhousemuir at the weekend, Byrne believes Rovers have already shown they’ll be able to mix it with the best in League Two this term.

The 25-year-old said: “It’s early doors, but the boys are starting to see we can be looking at the right end of the table.

“We’ve taken points off of two of the big teams that were up there last season and have potential to go and challenge for the league this season.

“Stenny are a team that’s been tipped to be up there challenging this season, so for us to go and do what we’ve done here, it gives us confidence for the Elgin game. I’d say we’ve matched them quite well, so we’ll see what happens now but it’s a long old season.

“We shouldn’t fear anyone.

“I’ve got a good record at Elgin myself and so have Albion Rovers, so everyone is going up there believing we can get the three points.”

Rovers boss Brian Reid, whose side sit third in the table, isn’t taking anything for granted.

City have taken just a point from their openers, having drawn with Stranraer at home and losing away to Cowdenbeath on Saturday, and Reid said: “We expect a tough game because Elgin is not an easy place to go.

“If we can get the ball down, do the right things and we’ll certainly give ourselves a chance.

"It’s a long journey, but we’ve got a good record against Elgin since I came to the club and hopefully that continues.”
