Albion Rovers complete signing swoops as Cliftonhill side gear up for new term

Albion Rovers have signed Kyle Fleming and Aytron Sonkur from League Two rivals Annan Athletic and Stranraer.

Manager Brian Reid is revamping his squad for another season in Scotland's fourth tier and has claimed two new additions.

20-year-old Fleming will bolster the midfield after a spell at Galabank.

Sonkur - also formerly of Annan - joins up from Stranraer and will add a towering presence to their defence.

Rovers kick off their new campaign with a Premier Sport Cup group stage match at home to Premiership side Livingston next month.

They said in a club statement: "Albion Rovers are delighted to announce that towering centre-half Ayrton Sonkur joins us after leaving Stranraer this month.

"The 6ft 3in Melrose-born defender played 28 times in cinch League 2 last season for the Stair Park side. He was a mainstay in Jamie Hamill’s outfit and is a physical presence for sure!

"His 50-odd games for Annan Athletic in division beforehand just add to the experience and know-how he will bring to Cliftonhill. One of his two goals came against us in a 5-0 thumping (the less said the better) and we look forward to welcoming him to the club.

"Midfielder Kyle joins us after leaving Annan Athletic, where he was involved with the side that finished second and just missed out on promotion to the third tier.

"The 20-year-old played 23 times in the campaign and can play across the middle of the park. He has over 50 appearances at this level so he is no stranger to our league despite his age."

Experienced attacking midfielder Michael Paton will also be joining after leaving Brechin City last month. The 33-year-old made 25 appearances in the Highland League last campaign.

Reid said: “Michael has had a top career and he is a great one for us to get in the door. We’re always looking to add experience and he plays in an area that I felt possibly lacked that a little last year.

"I’ve known Michael for a good few years and I think his professionalism will really benefit the group and he will set the standards high in every training session and every match.”
