Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid 'angry' at failure to beat Stirling after penalty agony

Brian Reid reveals he was initially ‘angry’ not to beat Stirling Albion after a tale of two penalties.

Matthew Aitken missed the chance to double Rovers’ lead from the spot just after half-time before Andy Ryan equalised for the Binos on 67 minutes.

Aitken had earlier grabbed his sixth goal of the League 2 campaign to give Rovers a lead but on reflection, Reid was content with a point.

He said: “In the cold light of day before the game, I’d be happy with a point because Stirling are a big, strong team.

“They’ve invested a lot, have a strong squad and are up there challenging but I was angry because I felt we should have had the three points.

“It was almost like losing two points but that’s credit to the players and how far we’ve come that we can go to Stirling Albion and be disappointed with a point - I said that to the players.

“I’m really pleased with how the team performed last night. We showed great determination, played good football, looked like a solid big unit and we created chances against a good Stirling Albion side.

“We’ll take plenty of positives from the game but I’m just disappointed to get a point because it should have been three.”

Blair Currie’s save from Aitken came back to haunt Rovers when Stirling were awarded a controversial penalty on 66 minutes.

Jamie Leslie was adjudged to have brought down Jack Leith but Rovers boss Reid was informed that it was a dubious decision.

He said : “We got hit with a sucker punch because, although I’ve not seen it back, by all accounts their penalty was really, really soft.

“It’s two players together in the box and the ball is well away from the boy and he’s never going to get to it.

“But he goes down and the referee gives the penalty so it was a double-whammy which makes it even harder to take.

“If we’d scored the penalty then it would have been 2-0. With no disrespect to Stirling Albion, I don’t think they’d recover from that and we’d have gone on to win the game.

“But you’ve got to take these moments, kill the game off and score a penalty kick.
