Albion Rovers boss baffled by ref's explanation for not giving penalty in Stenny draw

Brian Reid has been left baffled by referee Ross Hardie's explanation for denying Albion Rovers a stonewall penalty in their last-gasp draw with Stenhousemuir.

David Wilson netted a superb equaliser right at the death to salvage a point after an action-packed second half, which saw Rovers open the scoring through Scott Roberts before Thomas Orr and Robert Thomson put the Warriors in front.

However, the big talking point came in the first half when Stenny defender Sean Crighton looked to have barged Declan Byrne over as he broke into the box.

Ref Hardie, who was taking charge of his first SPFL league match, infuriated the Cliftonhill faithful when he turned down huge claims for a spot-kick and a likely red card for the Stenny man.

And the whistler has left Reid flabbergasted after allegedly telling the Rovers boss it was a foul - but not enough for Byrne to go down.

Reid said: "The big decisions have gone against us again.

"For me, we should have had a stonewall penalty.

"The referee has said there is contact and it's a foul, but he didn't think it wasn't enough.

"But I don't understand that. Why would my striker go down when he is through on goal?

"Another big decision like that has gone against us."

That wasn't the only point that irked Reid, though, as he wasn't happy with the decision that led to Stenny's second goal.

He added: "Even the one when they score their second goal [went against Rovers].

"It should have been a drop ball, but he gives it to them, they switch the play and it's crossed into the box and they score.

"The crucial decisions haven't gone for us, but I felt we could have defended better.

"I think it was his first game but I'm not going to criticise referees, I just think a couple of crucial decisions went against us that could have changed the whole complexion of the game.

"That's football, it is what it is, but we'll take a point after being 2-1 down."
