Albion Rovers appoint Brian Reid as new manager

Brian Reid has been appointed the new manager of Albion Rovers.

The 49-year-old is back in Scottish football with the League Two side three years after he was sacked by Stranraer.

Reid succeeds Kevin Harper, who turned down the opportunity to renew his contract on reduced terms last month.

Lanarkshire Live Sport understands ex-Ayr United boss Reid beat the likes of former Aberdeen defender Zander Diamond, ex-Airdrie gaffer Jimmy Boyle and ex-Rovers skipper Mick Dunlop to the role.

Reid will appoint his assistant in due course.

The new Rovers boss said: "It's a good challenge for me.

"The circumstances are difficult in football and any industry at the moment, so I'm delighted to be back in and I'm looking forward to it.

"Albion Rovers are a well established club. I've been up here as manager and played here over the years and it's got a reputation as a club that's maybe sometimes down on its luck a bit, but it's up to me to come in and push us up the table a wee bit.

"The last couple of seasons we've been down near the bottom and, like any manager, you want to come in and improve.

"That's not to take anything from Kevin. I just want to put my own mark on it and make us competitive, that's my ambition."

Albion Rovers secretary Colin Woodward said: "We are delighted to have Brian on board.

"He has great experience in Scotland with Ayr United and Stranraer, which I'm sure will stand him in good stead for the task ahead."

The move to Cliftonhill comes two years after an ill-fated stint in Cyprus as Steven Pressley's assistant at Pafos. The duo were relieved of their duties in October 2018 with the side sitting second bottom of the table without a win in their opening four matches.

But Reid has a strong track record in Scotland, twice guiding The Honest Men to promotion to the old First Division in 2008 and 2011.

He replaced Stevie Aitken at Stranraer in 2015 and took the club to the Championship play-off final that season, only to be beaten by his former side Ayr.

Rovers will hope he can have them fighting it out at the top end of League Two when football returns from the Covid-19 shutdown.
