Albian Ajeti in the clear as Celtic star's diving ban overturned at SFA hearing thanks to 'not proven' verdict

Celtic striker Albian Ajeti has avoided a two-game SFA ban for diving after an appeal returned a not proven verdict.

The Parkhead forward was retrospectively cited for simulation after going down to win a penalty in last week's win over Kilmarnock.

Ajeti challenged for the ball with keeper Colin Doyle and hit the deck under pressure before Odsonne Edouard converted the spot-kick.

Celtic were left "astonished" by the charge and Neil Lennon later confirmed they would contest it.

A Hampden hearing was originally scheduled for Monday before being pushed back 24 hours, and its outcome has put the 23-year-old in the clear.

After examining the evidence the panel returned a not proven verdict, meaning the Swiss is free to face St Mirren and St Johnstone.

After the charge was announced Celtic boss Lennon slammed the SFA for citing his player.

He said: “If you’ve three referees looking at that and they can’t see that there’s contact, then I think the three referees need to be looked at rather than anything else.

“I’m pretty sure one or two other referees said there was contact, so why this process is still ongoing, I don’t understand.

“I couldn’t believe it. You see some of the other things that are going on around the country that we don’t make a big deal of.

“I’m surprised, but we’ll defend it as vigorously as possible. He (Ajeti) is not upset. He’s just bewildered by it all.

“He just doesn’t understand why these charges have been brought, but we’re confident we can win the appeal.

“He’s gone for the ball and the goalkeeper has made contact with his foot or his ankle, so he’s gone over and it’s a penalty.

“Where this charge of simulation comes from is absolutely beyond me.

“I certainly don’t understand where this one has come from because you can clearly see that there is contact."
