Albian Ajeti in Celtic injury boost as striker set to return for Rangers showdown

Albian Ajeti is set to offer Celtic a massive boost by returning for the Old Firm game.

But team-mate James Forrest will be missing for another month after scans revealed a stress fracture in an ankle.

Ajeti could return to training at the end of this week as he makes progress from a hamstring pull.

The Swiss international sustained the issue when scoring his fifth goal for the club in their victory over Hibs 10 days ago and missed the subsequent matches against Sarajevo and St Johnstone.

Ajeti's recovery timeline is welcome news following Odsonne Edouard's positive Covid-19 test revealed on Tuesday night.

Manager Neil Lennon has offered an upbeat bulletin on Ajeti with the clash against Rangers looming on Saturday week.

He explained: “Albian is feeling good. I spoke to him Tuesday morning when he came in to do some running and I hope he’ll join us again for training at the end of this week or the start of next week.”

Nir Bitton could also be involved against Rangers as he battles against an ankle injury sustained in Bosnia.

Israel have included them in their squad for the game against Scotland tomorrow night and the subsequent Nations League encounters against Czech Republic and Slovakia, but Lennon doesn’t see that as possible for the 28-year-old.

He said: “I don’t think he’ll be fit to play for them. I reckon he won’t be ready for that until the first game after the break.”

Forrest, though, is going to be absent for at least another month.

The Scotland winger managed to play through the pain before limping off during the Europa League qualifier against Riga and extensive medical tests have finally brought the issue to light.

Lennon said: “It’s a very tiny stress fracture. We did two scans with James and the second CT scan showed it up.

“He’ll need to rest it for a couple of weeks and then do his rehab, so we’re probably looking at doing without him for four to six weeks and he’s a couple of weeks into that already.

“Looking back, it’s remarkable that he played on when he was carrying that injury, but it got to the stage where he just couldn’t keep going.

“At least now we’ve got to the bottom of it, we know what the problem is and he’s being treated accordingly.”
