Albert Sambi Lokonga did not hesitate over Arsenal transfer as he relishes ‘big step’

Albert Sambi Lokonga says he did not hesitate for a single second when he first heard of Arsenal’s interest in his signature.

The Belgian midfielder has joined the Gunners from Anderlecht in a deal worth £15million before add-ons.

Lokonga rose through the academy at Anderlecht and had already captained Vincent Kompany's side, but jumped at the chance to move to the Premier League.

“The president of the club told me about the interest of Arsenal,” said Lokonga.

“My lawyer also told me about the interest of Arsenal and I didn’t hesitate for one second, I told them: ‘Yeah, excuse me, I will go there’.

“I have to thank the coach [Mikel Arteta] and [technical director] Edu because they really wanted me here.”

Aged just 21 the move to the Premier League is a significant step up, but one Lokonga is confident of making.

“It's a big move because I have been playing for Anderlecht for 10 years so it's going to be my first big move to another country,” he added.

“It's a big step, but I feel confident because we have to be. In the football world, you have to feel confident about yourself, but I'm looking to play in this league and I can't wait to start.”
