Albert Penello’s passing marks the loss of one of Xbox’s most influential voices, whose work defined multiple generations of Microsoft’s gaming vision

Albert Penello during an interview with gamefly.

Albert Penello, a long-standing and influential figure in the games industry, best known for his leadership role at Microsoft, has sadly passed away from cancer. His work helped shape Xbox into a more open, developer-friendly platform during a formative period for the brand, working on the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

He later went on to work at Amazon, continuing to apply his experience and insight at a senior level. Without Albert’s dedication, Xbox may have taken a very different path, and our sources say he had been contributing to plans for the next generation of Xbox as a consultant in recent months.

Tributes pour in following Albert Penello’s passing

News of Albert Penello’s passing prompted an immediate outpouring of tributes online, with many reflecting on their time working with him and describing him as consistently friendly, approachable, and generous with his time.

Former Xbox executive Larry Hryb, widely known as Major Nelson, shared a public message paying tribute to Albert and his impact on the industry.

Another well-known Xbox figure, Mike Ybarra, also posted his own message, remembering Albert’s influence and character.

Former head of Xbox Peter Moore echoed those sentiments, highlighting what a genuinely good person Albert was beyond his professional achievements.

It is never easy when the industry loses a veteran of Albert Penello’s stature, and thoughts remain with his family during this difficult time. His work and the way he treated those around him leave behind a legacy that will be remembered.

Those who wish to show their support to his family can do so by emailing PenelloFamily@gmail.com.

Albert was also working on a final passion project, which supporters can find on Kickstarter. The campaign focuses on Mighty Orbots Deluxe Combining 12-inch Figure (1985 Edition), described as a love letter to 80s collectibles inspired by the classic animated series Mighty Orbots.
