Albert Drive fire in Glasgow causes building collapse and homes to be evacuated

A tenement block has collapsed amid a large building blaze in Glasgow .

Police and fire crews rushed to , in the Pollokshields area of the city, around 11.30pm on Sunday, November 10.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed 11 fire crews to the scene as called Strawberry Spice Gardens.

A tenement collapsed at 5.40am as the fire continued to rage and nearby properties have been evacuated.

Residents spilled onto the streets as the fire service moved quickly to clear buildings.

One man was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital , where he is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Police Scotland say that there has been no further reports of any other injuries in the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said: “At around 11.30am, police were called to a report of a takeaway on fire in Albert Drive in Pollokshields.

“A number of residents have been evacuated from their homes.

“One man has been treated for smoke inhalation and he was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital as a precaution.

"No reports of any further injuries.

"The building which included flats above has collapsed at 5.40am this morning.

"Officers remain at the scene and enquiries are continuing.

"Road closures are currently in place in and around Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow, this is due to an ongoing incident being dealt with by Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland.

"Road closures are expected to be in place for several hours."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson added: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at 11.31pm on Sunday November 10 to reports of a fire within a building.

"Operations Control mobilised nine appliances and two height appliances to Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area.

"Crews are working to contain the fire that has taken hold within a commercial premises below flats."

First Minister and Glasgow Southside MSP Nicola Sturgeon has tweeted since the blaze broke out.

She said: "Dreadful news for affected residents and businesses in Pollokshields - any constituents who need assistance, please email or call my office."
