Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns have said they will reconsider Australia’s gun laws following the terrorist attack on Bondi Beach yesterday evening.
In an address to the media this morning, Minns said that changes to legislation on Australia’s gun reform is not out of the picture: “The short answer is yes”.
“We’re looking at it right now. We’re in the early stages of this investigation,” Minns said.
“NSW Police need to provide all the details of this inquiry to the government, but I made it clear last night that we’ll take every step we possibly can to keep our community safe.”
Minns continues to say that the terrorist attack, wherein two gunmen — now identified as a father and son based in Sydney — fired approximately 50 gunshots from a pedestrian bridge into a crowd of people gathered to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah, was an attempt to divide Australians.

“This is an intolerable situation. This is an attempt to break apart our social life, to divide Australian against Australian,” he said.
“There’s a massive role for the government, NSW Police, and regular citizens to play here to ensure that we keep our community safe, and I won’t hesitate to move legislation if it’s required.”
When asked at this morning’s press conference if he would lead legislative reform similar to those that followed the Port Arthur mass shooting in 1996, Albanese has said he will do “whatever is necessary”.
The Prime Minister also said he would address antisemitism, and stated he spoke to antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal, as well as other members of the Jewish community this morning, saying “we will continue to work with the community”.
“My government will continue to stand with Jewish Australians and continue to stand, to stamp out antisemitism in all of its forms,” Albanese said.
At the time of writing, 16 people have been confirmed dead during the anti-semitic shooting, including one child. One of the shooters, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, is amongst those killed.
