Albanese Calls Trump An ‘Obvious Performer’ Who ‘Loves The Camera’ In New Interview

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reflected on what it was like during his audience with Donald Trump, weeks after he secured two meetings with the US President.

ICYMI, Albanese and Trump united for highly-anticipated meetings on two occasions last month, with the first taking place at the White House and the second at a dinner with other world leaders in South Korea during the APEC summit.

While Albanese and Trump appeared friendly during and after the meetings, the Aussie PM has now revealed further details about what the president is like when the cameras are down. You know, since he’s famously outlandish whenever they’re up.

“He is a bit different,” Albanese said of what Trump is like behind closed doors on Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren radio show this morning.

“He’s obviously a performer. You can see that from the media interviews. He even gives press conferences on his plane, and he loves the camera,” he added.

Despite the public-facing antics that have defined both of his presidential terms, Albanese said Trump is “much more relaxed” in private.

“We chatted about all sorts of personal things and got on pretty well,” the PM said.

If you recall, Albanese had tried for months to secure an audience with the president after two failed attempts at the G7 in June and the UN general assembly in September.

He finally landed a meeting in which the AUKUS deal, rare minerals trade and tariffs were all on the agenda. While Albanese’s meetings with Trump were considered a success on the whole, it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

Former PM and current US ambassador Kevin Rudd caught a stray when his 2020 tweets calling Trump “destructive” were mentioned by a journalist in the White House.

“I don’t like you either and I probably never will,” Trump said of Rudd.

Albanese later defended Rudd as an “outstanding Australian representative”.

At the height of Trump’s tariff policies in March, Albanese said he had invited Trump to visit Australia because “American presidents will always be welcome here”.

Trump could head Down Under next year if Australia hosts the Quad summit, a meeting between the leaders of the US, Japan and India that will focus on China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific.
