Tony Blair’s former spin doctor Alastair Campbell today urged people to vote tactically in a general election.

Mr Campbell also revealed he will vote Labour in the next general election despite being expelled from the party for voting for the Liberal Democrats in the European elections.

Asked how he would vote if he was not in a safe Labour seat, he said: “I would think about voting tactically. If I was in a Conservative-Lib Dem marginal I would probably vote Lib Dem.

“I could even see myself in Scotland – to get rid of a Tory – to vote SNP. I think people will think like that.”

Mr Campbell, an adviser to the People’s Vote campaign which calls for a public vote on the final Brexit deal, has previously said he no longer wanted to be a Labour member claiming the party was facing an “existential crisis”.

He also wrote an open letter to Jeremy Corbyn in July saying the Labour leader was “unlikely” to win a majority in a snap general election.

However, the former No 10 director of communications, said the Lib Dems were “not my party” and that he did not back their stance to revoke Article 50 to cancel Brexit.

Today he told BBC Breakfast he will vote for shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer and added: “I live in Keir Starmer’s constituency, it’s a safe Labour seat and I will vote Labour. Partly because I like Keir.

“But also because I will – like millions of people – make a judgment according to what I think how the outcome will best facilitate a People’s Vote.”
