Alastair Campbell says Labour should 'reroute their politics back where people live their lives'

Tony Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell says Labour needs to "reroute politics back where people live their lives" after Boris Johnson's gamble on a snap General Election paid off handsomely.

The BBC's Andrew Neill asked Mr Campbell if the Labour party is "heading for a civil war."

He replied: "I hope not. I hope not because it's so obvious what has to happen.

"There's Mr [Jon] Lansman over there, you're going to talk to him in a minute.

"They're delusional if they think the public are going to support their politics.

"Let me just tell you this one fact.

"If Boris Johnson gets a full term, it will have been 50 years since any Labour leader other than Tony Blair won a general election.

"Can they let that sink into their heads and possibly start to reroute their politics back where people live their lives?

He also tweeted a quote from Momentum blaming Brexit as the "defining issue" of the election.

He added: "The delusion goes on. Can I insert a sobering fact into the fantasies? If ?@BorisJohnson? term runs the full five years to 2024 it will have been half a century since someone other than Tony Blair won a general election for @UKLabour."

It comes after he admitted on BBC Radio 5 Live in May that he had voted for the Lib Dems in the EU elections.

He said it was the first time in his life he did not vote for the Labour Party in an election.

He also launched a blistering attack on the party, warning its “policy of riding two horses has failed," the Express reports.

Mr Campbell told radio presenter Stephen Nolan: “I voted for one of the unequivocally pro-remain, pro-People’s Vote parties and I did that because I think that’s the right thing for the country.

“I also think it’s the right thing that the Labour party gets the message that this policy of riding two horses has failed.”
