Alaska town begins 65-day period of darkness

A town in Alaska has begun a 65-day period of darkness with residents not expected to see sunlight again until January.

The town of Utqiagvik experienced its last sunrise and sunset on Sunday and its 4,000 residents were plunged into darkness for at least two months.

Utqiagvik is now entering its 65-day period of darkness, also known as polar night.

The town is not the only area to experience Polar night in Alaska, but is the first location to be affected by it because of how far north it is.

Residents of the arctic town gathered to celebrate the final sunset of 2018 by watching film, 30 Days of Night, which depicts the town being overrun by vampires during the polar night.

Some residents said their view was distorted slightly, because weather conditions stopped them from seeing a clear sunset.

As well as facing dark conditions, temperatures in Utqiakg can drop to -10C or even -20C in winter.

The sun officially set at 1:43 p.m. Sunday in Utqiagvik, starting its 65-day hiatus from the town. It won't peek above the horizon again until January 23, 2019.
