Alaska earthquake: Tsunami warning after massive 7.8-magnitude tremor hits off coast

A tsunami warning has been issued after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Alaska peninsula.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude quake struck at a depth of six miles.

The tremor was centred off the coast, 60 miles south-south-east of the area of Perryville, it added.

The tsunami warning has been issued for southern Alaska, the Alaska peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the warning for south Alaska and the Alaska peninsula is from Kennedy Entrance to Unimak.

Along the Aleutian Islands, the warning also covers the area from Unimak Pas to Samalga Pass.

A tsunami advisory was posted for some areas nearby.

The centre said there is no tsunami threat for other US and Canadian coastlines.
