An alarming new video which shows how far a cough can travel around a supermarket highlights the importance of the "stay at home" message.
Researchers from Aalto University in Finland found that one single couch can spread coronavirus across a number of different aisles. Their study examined how very small respiratory particles are transported in the air after talking, sneezing and coughing.
The findings prompted the researchers to reiterate how vital it is that those who are feeling unwell self-isolate.
As reported by the Mirror, Professor Ville Vuorinen, one of the study's authors, said: "Someone infected by the coronavirus can cough and walk away, but then leave behind extremely small aerosol particules carrying the coronavirus. These particles could then end up in the respiratory tract of others in the vicinity."
Jussi Sane, Chief Specialist at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, added: "Stay at home if you are unwell and that you maintain physical distance with everyone.
"The instructions also include coughing into your sleeve or a tissue and taking care of good hand hygiene.
"Based on the modelling of the consortium, it is not yet possible to directly issue new recommendations.
"However, these results are an important part of the whole, and they should be compared with the date from real-life epidemic studies."
