The Scottish SPCA say there has been an 'alarming rise' in the number of bad breeders of dogs during lockdown, as they warn potential new owners.
The charity say the breeders are motivated solely by financial gain, with 'little thought' for the animals under their care.
In a bid to tackle the problem and those involved, the SSPCA have issued a checklist for those looking to adopt a pup in the run up to Christmas.
They say: "Now, more than ever, we need your help to tackle the low-welfare trade in puppies.
"Lockdown has seen an alarming rise in the number of bad breeders who give little thought to the welfare of the animals and are driven purely by profit.
"Mum will be used to churn out pup after pup which seriously impacts her health. Sadly, she can be discarded when she is no longer able to breed.
Here are some warning signs that you are dealing with a bad breeder:
- You are being rushed in to handing over cash for a pup
- You don't see your pup's mum. Don't accept any excuses
- They want to meet you or deliver the puppy
- Health issues are blamed on the breed of the dog or another excuse
- No licence or paperwork is provided for vaccinations, microchipping or worming
