The Nottingham Evening Post has been campaigning for seven years to increase the number of smoke detectors in the city's homes. But new figures from the fire service show that less than half the households in Nottingham have working alarms. The paper's "Sounding the Alarm" campaign, launched in 1999, resulted in at least 10,000 smoke alarms being fitted, about 80% of the city's homes. But a fire service survey shows that many people who fitted the detectors have failed to keep them in working order. Sounds as if a new Evening Post campaign may soon be under way.
